wide-eyed and curious,
he peeks from his shell
with seaweed speckles,
where 8 monarch butterflies
landed permanently.
he puts his footing on two of her fingers,
and turns to look up at my friend.
"He fits in the palm of my hand",
she says.
"I've never seen a box turtle this size."
